Abstract
The Audience was written during a period of transition for García Lorca. He began the play in New York or Havana in either 1929 or 1930. He was working on another experimental play called If Five Years Pass (Asi que pasan cinco anos) at the same time. Both of these plays show a movement in the direction of surrealism, but the acts available from The Audience (El Publico) constitute Lorca' s most sustained surrealistic effort.
