Abstract:

This research explored adult learners and programs for adult learners. Three organizations were involved: the British Open University, University of Maryland University College Open University program, and the National University Consortium for Telecommunications in Teaching/International University Consortium for Telecommunications in Learning.

This seven year longitudinal case study examined the administrative chronology by which Maryland successfully adopted and adapted the British Open University course materials to serve American adult students. The correspondence revealed the process whereby Maryland transformed and translated British Open University courses into mostly six and nine semester hour interdisciplinary courses which were successfully mastered by a new clientele of adult students enrolled in an external degree program. …
