Abstract:

While Jefferson’s preliminary ideas for a botanical garden at the University of Virginia have been briefly acknowledged in scholarship concerning both his enthusiasm for plants and gardens as well as the establishment of the University, the full story and significance of the ill-fated botanical garden has not been explained. This thesis will fill a gap in our knowledge of Jefferson’s Academical Village, a gap that has left us with an incomplete picture of Jefferson’s original intentions for his University.
