Abstract
Burkholderia cenocepacia causes infection in the lungs of cystic fibrosis, chronic granulomatous disease and immuno - compromised patients. B. cenocepacia is one of nine species comprising a subset of the Burkholderia genus that show similar phenotypes and pathogenesis, referred to as the Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc). Bcc infection varies in severity from asymptomatic, to chronic lung infection, to the life threatening "cepacia syndrome," which is a severe infection characterized by rapid decline due to necrotizing pneumonia, bacteremia and death. B. cenocepacia is the Bcc species documented as causing the most cases of cepacia syndrome. It is also one of the most prevalent Bcc isolates found and causes the majority of epidemics.
