Plurilingualism and Textual and Intertextual Translation in Francophone Tunisian Poetry (1978-2014)

Abstract
My dissertation titled, “Textual and Intertextual Translation in Francophone Tunisian Poetry (1978-2014),” explores the works of three contemporary Francophone North African poets: Abdelwahab Meddeb, Chems Nadir, and Jalel El Gharbi. I specifically look at the role of translation in their plurilingual poetry at the textual and intertextual levels. The first level touches on the modalities and expressions of plurilingual writing and its hermeneutical power. I specifically identify and parse the use and reception of foreign languages, particularly the Arabic language, in the French corpus. At the second level, using Gérard Genette’s notion of intertextuality (1982) in combination with Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation model (1966), I systematically define intertextuality, in the plurilingual context, as a translating practice. I demonstrate that the poets use citation, borrowing, allusion, and reference to translate the Quran and seminal Sufi Arabic and Persian texts and weave them into their French poetry. In doing so, my research puts forth the role of translation in giving plurilingual authors and readers the freedom to live and experience linguistic diversity in aesthetic reconciliation rather than ideological division.

Résumé
Notre thèse intitulée « Plurilinguisme et traduction textuelle et intertextuelle dans la poésie tunisienne de langue française (1978-2014) » propose une analyse des œuvres de trois poètes tunisiens Abdelwahab Meddeb, Chems Nadir, et Jalel El Gharbi. Il s’agit de mettre en avant le rôle de la traduction dans leur poésie plurilingue au niveau textuel et intertextuel. Le premier niveau représente les modalités et les expressions explicites de l’écriture plurilingue et de son pouvoir herméneutique. Nous y relevons et analysons l’emploi et la réception des langues étrangères, avec un intérêt particulier pour la langue arabe. Au second niveau, nous adoptons la taxonomie de Gérard Genette (1982) à la grille d’analyse des procédés de traductions de Vinay et Darbelnet (1966) afin de définir l’intertextualité, dans un contexte plurilingue, comme une pratique traduisante. Nous démontrons que les poètes utilisent la citation, l’emprunt, l’allusion et la référence pour traduire le Coran et des textes fondateurs arabes et persans soufis et les intégrer dans leur poésie en langue française. Ce faisant, notre thèse conclue que la traduction permet aux auteurs et aux lecteurs du texte plurilingue de vivre la diversité linguistique dans la réconciliation esthétique et non dans la division idéologique.
