Abstract
This study began as a biography of Sam Higginbottom. In its final form, this remains essentially the story of his distinguished and remarkable career. It is also a history of the Allahabad Agricultural Institute which Higginbottom founded and to which he devoted four decades of his life. In a way, this is also a survey of the development of Christian agricultural missions in India, since Higginbottom was the earliest representative of the movement and was its chief promoter.
