Abstract:

This thesis enters a broader conversation about how architecture can cultivate more mindful, human-centered spaces. Beyond program and function, architecture shapes feelings, feelings shape behaviors, and behaviors shape interactions-making mindful design essential. Mindfulness — the practice of grounding the body, engaging the senses, and becoming fully present — offers a remedy to the disconnection and stress of the mindless environments we experience daily. The issue of mindless paces is felt acutely in the American high school cafeteria, a universal and formative space where students routinely experience discomfort, anxiety, and social strain. School research confirms that students feel most unsafe in the cafeteria and that this space directly shapes overall school climate. Yet, design standards for this formative space address only federal requirements of safety and utility, with no requirements considering the quality of user experience. Drawing from personal experience, research, and a critical analysis of current discourse, I propose a toolkit of 12 sensory interventions to reimagine the cafeteria as a space for mindfulness. Inspired by natural elements — water, earth, air, and fire — these interventions employ design techniques to highlight the impact of spatial cues on behavior. These mindful design strategies aim to reduce hyper-awareness of others and increase presence, resulting in a more safe and grounded cafeteria experience for students. More than a set of polished objects, this work is a prompt and call to action to reconsider how every piece of architecture can be a mindful one. By encouraging active and present interaction with spaces, we can create environments that empower healthy relationships with the self and cultivate positive emotions, behaviors, and interactions.
