Abstract:

The purpose of this Thesis is to examine the ideas of Southern Know-Nothingism between 1854 and 1857, in the light of representative speeches on the stump and in Congress. More specifically, this study is confined to the stump speaking of Henry Washington Hilliard of Alabama and William Gannaway Brownlow of Tennessee, and the congressional speaking of Henry Winkler Davis of Maryland and John J. Crittenden of Kentucky.
