Abstract
With the somewhat fragmentary information extant, it is hard to generalize as to the extent of private libraries in Virginia in the Eighteenth century. Forty-six inventories of libraries have been gathered and examined. The author is convinced that the libraries analyzed are representative ones, belongs to representative men, and show to some extent the economic, social, and geographic distribution of books in Virginia in the Eighteenth century.
