Abstract:
This study is not intended to be a biography of John S. Barbour Jr., nor is it a full treatment of his life in Virginia and national politics. What is attempted is to evaluate Barbour’s role on the restoration of the Democratic Party, following the Readjuster period from 1883 to 1892. This Democratic victory enabled the party to control the State of Virginia to the present day.
