Abstract:
The American painter Milton Avery (1893-1965) created a body of work virtually unique in American art in which the aesthetics and vision of the late nineteenth century were gradually translated into a fully modern, twentieth century form. Even as Avery pushed his art to the edge of abstraction, he continued to rely on direct observation of nature, compositional formulae and motifs present throughout his career.
