Abstract
The STS paper, Cold Water Immersion’s Plunge into Mainstream Culture, shifts focus from injury prevention to recovery, critically analyzing how Cold Water Immersion (CWI) has become a popular wellness practice far beyond its origins in clinical and athletic contexts. The paper argues that while CWI was initially shaped by its early adopters—elite athletes, researchers, and physical therapists—it now shapes the behavior and beliefs of a much wider public. The cultural rise of CWI is linked not only to its claimed physiological benefits but also to its symbolic value as a marker of resilience, discipline, and natural healing. Influencers, social media, and the commodification of wellness have all contributed to CWI’s widespread adoption, often outpacing empirical research on its efficacy. The paper highlights the shifting agency of the technology itself as it becomes embedded in daily routines and health ideologies, raising questions about how recovery methods are validated, popularized, and ritualized in modern culture.
