Abstract
This dissertation traces the connections between peace activists in the United States and divided Germany during the 1980s. After the Euromissile Crisis (1979-83), a time of vibrant public protest, peace activists continued to forge alliances across national borders throughout the rest of the decade. Strategies and goals were multi-faceted and went far beyond nuclear abolitionism, addressing the militarization of society, human rights and freedoms, economic inequality, and the fundamental structures of the Cold War bloc system. Importantly, these peace activists did not emerge merely within their national contexts but created transnational networks and alliances.
