Abstract:

This thesis reads the films The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit and Dr. Strangelove through the lens of The Lonely Crowd by David Reisman. The purpose of this reading is to show that these two very different films are each an excellent index of the cultures which produced them. The genre of each--melodrama and dark, subversive satire--is appropriate for its time. Each film features an individual who is punished by the hegemonic peer group for acting upon his instincts.
