Abstract
The purpose of this study is to derive from the wealth of the historical records and fragmentary notes a connected account of the professional training of teachers in Virginia. The study begins with colonial times and ends with the close of the first quarter of the twentieth century. The term professional training in the title is used in its wide connotation: it includes general preparation and specific preparation for teaching.
The study is limited to white teachers of Virginia. The preparation of elementary and secondary teachers for public and private schools is the heart of the study. Attention is devoted to in-service training and well as to pre-service training. Public, private and denominational teacher-training institutions are included in the study.
