Abstract
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content: When we consider what is loosely deemed the postmodern or contemporary period in American literature, it is often from the perspective of so-called metafiction. Academics and others point to writers on the order of Thomas Pynchon and Don DeLillo as hallmarks of the former. Recent scholarship shows renewed interest in the period; Amy Hungerford’s 2008 essay “On the Period Formerly Known as Contemporary,” and Gordon Hutner’s response argue its need for scholarly evaluation.
