Abstract:
The Cotton States and International Exposition was held in Piedmont Park at Atlanta, Georgia, from September 18 to December 31 of 1895. Calculated by its originators to demonstrate the positive attributes of the New South, the Exposition can, in a retrospective view, provide a key vantage point for divining some of the themes existing at a complex and contradictory point in Southern history; a point from which the Northeastern orientation of the commercial oligarchs would be replaced by a renewed regional identity.
