Abstract
In this thesis, I explore scholarship about basic writing courses in order to understand the needs of basic writers and the pedagogical approaches instructors take in such courses. I discuss the contributions of five basic writing instructors who I interviewed in tandem with literature reviews. In my analysis, I find two predominant themes that these instructors discuss which support existing scholarship: The Pedagogy of Empowered Learning and The Pedagogy of Holistic Care. I highlight the instructors' specific strategies and practices that contribute to student success in their classrooms.
