Abstract
In El libro del conde Lucanor, written about fifty years after the reign of Alfonso X, the notion that power resides in being able to read and decipher a text is central. The book of the "Enxemplos" is written in such a way that all who read it would be able to understand and learn from it. Even though it is apparent from the beginning that the book was written for the nobility, the matter of the power of reading and writing is made explicit in Parts II through V. In this paper I will explain how and why don Juan Manuel manipulates his text in order to represent the power that resides in the knowledge of his readers, concentrating on parts II through v of El libro del conde Lucanor.
