Abstract
Book dedications occupied a central position in the construction of early modern works. This dissertation shows that book dedications form a distinct literary genre integral to the works to which they are attached, argues for the necessity of understanding dedications as bibliographical artifacts, and reads dedications as a vital cultural form within the economy of the patronage system.
