Abstract
<p>This paper discusses the Twelfth Amendment controversey. Examines the origins of the Twelfth Amendment in the rough and tumble of inter- and intra-party politics. Traces the history of the "designating principle" as part of the evolving party system. Analyzes the ratification of the amendment.</p>
