Abstract:

A. Lawrence Kocher designed the Studies Building at Black Mountain College to represent in physical form, the progressive nature of the educational system. An analysis of the founding and early history of the Black Mountain College; an examination of its teaching method, which employed the arts as a primary focus; and the evolution of the building program, suggest the nexus between the structural form of the building and the intellectual goals of the College.
