My thesis portfolio includes a technical land development design project for a joint fire station and parks and recreation facility in Chesterfield, Virginia; a STS research paper focused on the complexities of water resource distribution in the Deschutes River Basin of Oregon; a prospectus that proposes a project to work on a solid waste management plan for the Moduli District, Tanzania; and a sociotechnical synthesis that ties the other three together. The purpose of each of these projects is to explore different disciplines of civil and environmental engineering, while applying skills learned in my degree program. For the technical report, my team and I developed a set of plan sheets that detail first steps in the land development process and design for the fire station and trail head. My STS research paper explores the complexities of prior appropriation of resources in resource scarce areas, focusing on conflicting opinions of local communities on conservation priorities, concluding that there is much work to be done to reach a solution that addresses all needs. My prospectus lays out a general proposal for a solid waste management plan which could be further developed into a different technical project. Each of these projects addresses critical resource and service needs for various communities, and builds upon skills learned here at UVA.
