Abstract:
In our society there are two fundamental groups: males and females. The two groups are considered mutually exclusive with membership in each group permanently assigned at birth. However, there exists a small number of individuals who chose to change their sexual status. This involves not only a change in sex role but also changing the genitals. In order to change from one sex to another, transsexuals must undergo a ritualized process. They must submit to the requirements of the medical profession in order to obtain sex change surgery. This process is analysed with Van Gennep’s tripartite schema as a rite of passage from one sexual status to another. The rites of separation, transition, and incorporation are described and analysed.
