Abstract
In the tech sector, how do employers and employees compete to advance their respective interests? Mobile platforms have compelled established companies and employees to adapt.
Since 2007, smartphones have compelled the tech sector to abandon desktop employment models and adopt mobile-first strategies. To adapt, Google transformed its mobile strategy, while BlackBerry failed when it misjudged the smartphone’s implications. The shift from perpetual software licenses to subscription-based models transformed the fundamental relationship between software producers and consumers.
AI tools are automating hiring processes. InterviewInsights is a full-stack web application on which jobseekers document and share their experiences with AI-driven hiring tools, thereby crowdsourcing perspectives. Jobseekers can use it to shift the balance of power in their favor. Consistent with the Social Construction of Technology framework, participant groups interpret AI hiring tools differently. To recruiters these systems are black boxes that conceal their algorithmic decision-making processes. While AI is efficient for employers, it strips away the human elements of recruiting and forces candidates to appeal to the algorithm.
