Abstract
The intersection of rapid technological advancements and evolving social behaviors presents a complex research problem: how communication technologies reshape interpersonal interaction and social norms among young adults. It requires exploring both the design and impact of digital platforms, focusing on how they mediate and transform communication patterns in contemporary society.
The technical project involves developing a hazing reporting application designed to provide a secure, anonymous platform for sensitive disclosures. By addressing privacy concerns through features such as anonymous login and encrypted data storage, the application mirrors many communication behaviors found in instant messaging platforms, including selective disclosure and asynchronous interaction. The project demonstrates how digital tools can be engineered to support user trust and safety, especially in contexts requiring confidentiality, while emphasizing usability and transparency through platform mediation.
The sociotechnical research paper investigates the broader cultural and social implications of instant messaging technologies on young adults’ communication norms. Using social constructivism and built environment frameworks, it analyzes how these platforms actively shape and are shaped by user behaviors, social pressures, and expectations for immediacy. Drawing on qualitative data and case studies, the research highlights the dynamic relationship between technology design and social interaction, offering insights into how digital communication tools influence social norms, emotional expression, and interpersonal trust.
