Abstract
Aims
To evaluate whether a standardized GLP-1 patient education toolkit improves medication adherence and metabolic outcomes in adults older than 55 years initiating GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy.
Methods
This quality improvement project was conducted in an outpatient clinic. Adults older than 55 years eligible for GLP-1 initiation or recent initiation within the previous 3 months were screened for cognitive capacity using the Saint Louis University Mental Status (SLUMS) examination; scores ≥15 were required. Due to cost constraints, enrollment was limited to 10 participants; nine enrolled and completed the project. Standardized education using a GLP-1 toolkit consisting of a written flyer and instructional video was delivered at baseline. Surveys at 4 and 8 weeks, with a final survey at 8 weeks, assessed understanding of side effects and management. Hemoglobin A1c and weight were obtained through chart review.
Results
All participants remained on GLP-1 therapy (100%). Hemoglobin A1c decreased in 8 of 9 participants (89%). Weight decreased in 6 of 9 participants (67%), with a mean loss of 19 pounds.
Conclusions
Standardized patient education supported continued medication use and was associated with improved metabolic outcomes in older adults initiating GLP-1 therapy.
