Abstract
The smartphone is a device that has been associated with widespread mental illness and, in general, negative psychological effects. These findings are particularly concerning given the widespread use of the smartphone, and this overarching problem is what my STS research addresses. My technical research problem is a more granular view of this aforementioned problem—specifically, entertainment applications on the smartphone can contribute to smartphone overuse to the point where this use displaces necessary activities such as professional or academic work. This phenomenon could lead to reduced school performance in children.
