Using Advising Technology to Deliver Holistic Support for Undergraduate Students at a 4-Year Postsecondary Institution 23 views

In response to recommendations from an advising task force, Blue Mountain University adopted an advising technology platform to support a holistic approach to undergraduate advising that integrates students’ academic, career, and personal needs. Prior research suggests that advising technology can enhance holistic support by streamlining advisor workflows, improving communication and collaboration, strengthening personalization, and identifying students who may require additional support. This case study examines how undergraduate advisors are leveraging the platform to deliver holistic student support and identifies the preparation and training needed for effective use. Qualitative data were collected through semi structured interviews with advisors from seven undergraduate schools, and quantitative data were gathered through an anonymous survey of 500 advisors, yielding a 20% response rate. Findings indicate that advising technology enables more personalized support and strengthens advisor–student relationships by reducing administrative burden and improving advisor preparation. Advisor adoption is strongest when platform tools address clear technology gaps, integrate with existing systems, and align with defined school or program expectations. Clarifying policies, expanding adoption among student-supporting faculty and staff, and providing context-specific professional development may further enhance collaboration and effective use of advising technology.
