Abstract
This investigation was carried out in order to clarify the significance of chromosome number in relation to cold resistance and, more specifically, determine the relation of polyploidy, if any, to cold resistance and winter hardiness in the higher plants. Related species with striking differences in ability to withstand low temperatures were grown in similar-environment experimental plots, and cytological analyes of their chromosome complements and determinations of their ability to withstand cold were made. Preliminary work was also done on inter- and intra-specific and inter-generic hybridization.
