Abstract
This thesis presents two independent projects as part of the graduation requirements from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Virginia, one technical project and one sociotechnical project. The technical project is titled Smoothness of Symbol codes, and investigates theoretical boundaries in information theory and data compression. The sociotechnical project is titled Algorithms and Addictions, and explores the role of recommendation algorithms in producing user addiction on short-form content platforms.
