Abstract
My technical research project focused on analyzing the construction planning, site constraints, and risk factors involved in the construction and renovation of the McIntire School Expansion at UVA. My STS research focused on how different project delivery methods shape communication, trust, and relationships between stakeholders on a construction project. Both projects examine construction project success, but they focus on different factors that influence it. The technical research question focuses on technical design questions and creative solutions for excavation support, tunnel sequencing, site logistics, concrete estimating, and risk planning, while the STS research examines the people responsible for carrying out those decisions and how contractual relationships, communication, and trust can be as impactful as technical difficulties in a project. Together, these two research projects examine two sides of the same goal: how to make a construction project efficient and successful. This connection shows why engineering practice depends not only on solving technical problems, but also on understanding the human and organizational systems that shape how those solutions are carried out.
