Abstract:

A study of the Carrére and Hastings' firm. Architects for the Jefferson Hotel of 1895. Study of their work has been largely based in the buildings themselves and in contemporary publications. Records dealing with the hotels construction are scanty. Fortunately, many of the original annotated working drawings were discovered during a renovation of the hotel and are preserved, together with a collection of historic photographs, in Richmond. Thomas Hastings wrote several articles in which he discussed his general approach to design.
