Abstract
The following pages attempt to advance understanding of Lynchburg, Virginia, during a traumatic period in its history. The focus is on two series of events that I have found to be particularly revealing of Lynchburg society. Quantitative materials are used to delineate the dimensions of occupation, class and race that shaped the outbursts of discontent in the city on the James. Hopefully, the result is a better insight into life in Lynchburg and other American cities during the late nineteenth century.
