Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to review and critique ISIS's application and argumentation of takfīr in the context of the sources that ISIS claims to derive its legitimacy from, specifically the reigns of Abu Bakr and Ali and the works of Ibn Taymiyyah. In doing so, the paper will not only provide a better definition and understanding of the historical application of takfīr, but it will also strive to show that ISIS's widespread use of takfīr is misguided and not supported in the same sources and history that ISIS attempts to utilize.
