Abstract:
This study addresses specifically how the period 1860-1870 affected the fortunes of four Piedmont Virginia planters – Thomas S. Watson, Robert T. Hubard, Edmund W. Hubard and James L. Hubard. The focus is on the master-slave relationships during the war years and the planter-free labor relations in the post-1865 era.
