Abstract:
An intellectual biography of the unconventional professor John Spencer Bassett, focusing on his social attitudes and reform thought. His 1903 trial before the trustees of his North Carolina institution for his unconventional views of Southern race relations shows how the spirit of academic freedom triumphed over provincialism and intolerance.
