Abstract:

I was interested in the recent surge of fairy tale films and television programs that have emerged within the last ten years. I decided to look at the history of fairy tales, beginning with their oral tradition, followed by their literary tradition, and finally moving toward what I call their visual tradition. During the time of oral and literary fairy tales, a society's culture and standard of behavior are often reflected in their tales so it is only logical that the visual tales we watch today reflect that same thing. I also followed the history and growth of special effects makeup and their impact on how we are able to view these fairy tale films. With the modern advances in technology as well as in practical effects, we are able to view fairy tales in realistic settings with characters, no matter how fantastical, that are as real as you and me.
