Abstract
There is no complete classification of dominance in equine coat color due to the lack of a genotype for brown. A lack of agreement in the color terminology of horsemen and geneticists and inaccuracies in the equine stud books concerning brown, particularly, is responsible to a great degree for this void. The purpose of this study, conducted to a great extent with animals known to the author and used to avoid the inaccuracies of the stud books, is to first determine the brown genotype, and then classify the basic coat colors as a genotypic aid to horsemen in accurately identifying and registering their stock.
